Types of Heart Transplant Procedures

• Orthotopic Heart Transplant: This is the most frequently performed type, where the donor heart is positioned in the same location as the recipient’s original heart. The recipient’s heart is removed, and the donor heart is secured in place, connecting it to the recipient’s major blood vessels and heart chambers.
• Heterotopic (or Piggyback) Heart Transplant: This less common approach involves placing the donor heart next to the recipient’s own heart. It is sometimes utilized when the complete removal of the recipient’s heart poses significant risks or complications.
